Your perspective on how to promote and perpetuate a positive culture is one many schools and educators struggle with and I agree with you 100% that every member of the school community (including kids & families) have a part in building and sustaining that culture. I have been doing a couple of new routines - 6 min miracle morning and #bfc530 Twitter chat - that have made a huge difference in my days. I feel joyful and I am sharing that around, no matter who I encounter during the school day. Part of what's so horrible is that everyone knows that it's happening and chooses to be silent. It's something that teachers as leaders can help stop. A principal can't do it alone. I wouldn't have expected the behaviour from my 5 year olds...but yet I let the negativity hang around. I've had a friend bullied at another school and it's awful! I may have been that negative or draining force at my school that was influenced by others to follow this path, though the decision is always mine to make. Maybe we've all been there at one time or another? I feel I'm in a different place now, but It's a great wake up call for everyone because sometimes the easiest thing to do is to ignore the naysayers and retreat into the classroom. I'm outspoken enough as it is and sometimes get in trouble for that. Will be thinking a lot about what you say here. Thanks for the book recommendations, too.
